Don’t Let the Procrastination Theif Rob You

June 28th, 2010

Don't Let The Procrastination Theif Rob YouRecently, I spent a fair about of time studying a thief that I’m sure we are all familiar with, procrastination. I knew I’d get around to it one day. [Canned laughter... It's a tough crowd.] What I’ve discovered through some serious introspection is it seems to be a topic just about everyone understands. Seems to me whenever the topic is brought up, everyone always nods their head and says, “Ya ya, I know, I know.” But do they really. I think most recognize that procrastination exists, but have a hard time conquering it. Every January people from all over the world make resolutions to change something in their lives. Most of these resolutions fall by the wayside fairly quickly. But people know they should modify their behavior but have a hard time doing it.

When it comes to building businesses online there is a lot to learn. Even if you do have experience, things change quite quickly. You need to be learning constantly. Additionally, you have to become a business specialist. You have to contend with taxes, bookkeeping, affiliates, vendors, advertising, fulfillment, traffic, lead generation, etc. If you are a procrastinator, you’ll be eaten alive. You may as well simply donate your time to some civic group. You at least have something to show for it.

As I mentioned earlier, most people recognize procrastination. They know that they can’t blame others and are responsible for their own actions. They understand that they have to be goal orientated. They understand that even bad action is better than no action and that they need to break bad habits that rob time. But there is one that is a little bit harder to recognize. That is that the time you spend at your computer had better be productive and directly responsible to creating income. That’s the bottom line. Checking your email 15 times a day, perusing over to your Facebook Page, or your Twitter account and following links to who know where and generally, spending time on your computer unproductively is a type of procrastination. There are many ways to rationalize this practice but holding it up to the test of creating income for your business is the litmus test.

There certainly are strategies of using social media, but just make sure you schedule your time for that action. If it is taking more time than you allocated, make sure you are receiving a measurable and tangible benefit.

Now I want to throw a caveat on all of this and it’s that you should concentrate your time on money generating activities and automate or outsource the rest. For some, the money making activity might be networking with people by calling them up. For those who are technically savvy, web creation may be their ticket so to speak. For some it may be copy writing.

So in closing I ask you examine some of the things you may be procrastinating with and try and uncover the root cause, make some resolutions and find ways to combat the thief, and your bank account will love you for it.

Discover How To Create Irresistible and Tempting Titles

September 25th, 2009

I had a few questions about titles this weekend. I’ll bring this old post out front and center once again in case you missed it.

titleWhat’s in a title?
How you title things make a tremendous impact on whether people will read or consider reading content. In this context, content is in the form of emails, blog posts, tweets, Ezine articles, and other forms of communication that you want others to read. In all cases the main goal is to get people to open, click, or otherwise save or bookmark for reading later. Let’s examine some of the forms of communication.

Email Subjects

The title is contained as what in email parlance as the subject. Subjects are treated a little bit differently based on who the email is coming from. The difference is based on one thing. That is trust. If the email is coming from someone they trust, friends and family for sure, they will open. But there is also information that was requested and comes in the form of newsletters, RSS feeds, and other aggregations of information. If someone doesn’t recognize the senders name they are typically going to look at the subject and make a determination as to what they are going to do. What the subject contains will determine the reader’s next actions. If it’s from you, you want to have as an inviting subject as possible.

Blog Post Titles
A blog post title works in the same way as a subject line in an email. Your objective is to get people to read your post. Hopefully, when your blog post is syndicated throughout the Internet via Twitter tweets, Facebook notes, blog backlinks, email bodies, and other forms of electronic communication it will compel people to open and read it. Another factor that has to be considered in blog post titles is the SEO factor. Your title should both contain a keyword or two and also be relevant to the content that is contained in it. If you have a title about cars, your content better not be about plants. I’ll talk about some of the psychological factors below.

Ezine Articles
Titles should work the same way as blog post titles but should probably have more of an emphasis on keywords than actions or questions contained in the title. Most people simply do not search Ezines. They use Google and Google recommends the Ezine articles to them. The more SEO friendly the title, the better the ranking and higher it’s possibility to be towards the top of the search. I also recommend your resource box contain a link to your blog.

Twitter Tweets
Now tweets per se don’t have the concept of a title but it should be contained some where in the 140 characters. Having important attention grabbing phrases that are contained in the actual article with the title in your tweets will help people feel compelled to click them and follow the link over to the source. Using certain psychological keywords will raise the probability of the tweet being opened. They will grab the attention of the readers.

In all these examples, if you understand underlying psychological impulses and urges you can use them to your advantage. So if we ask the question, what do people want?, what do people respond to?, what do people have an interest in?, and are people interested in?, this should provide us with some clues to help formulate a title. Here are some different types of titles that you should strive for?

Types of Titles

  1. Tell them something true about them and then tell them to take action.
  2. Create compelling curiosity.
  3. Make claims that are almost unbelievable.  (Be able to back them up)
  4. Create something of high interest to target direct interests.
  5. Use humor.  If you can make them laugh they will click.
  6. Inspire and motivate them.  If they feel good about themselves and they will act.
  7. Make them mysterious.  People like mysteries.
  8. Appeal to their logic.  Restate something they believe strongly.

So these are the categories or types of possible titles or subjects that can be used.  Now that we know what it is we need to formulate what words can we use that will compel people to act.  We need to use words that influence, persuade, and motivate people to act, (click, read, signup, etc…).  This can be accomplished by using words that can help people image something.  They are words that describe things in ways that make them bigger than life.  They are words that evoke emotion.  Here are some words that will practically compel people to their natural predispositions to investigate things that are curious, humorous, mysterious, logical, interesting, and bold.  This of course is not an exhaustible list.  They contain:

Words to Use

irresistible untold boggle double
triple quadruple unstoppable potent
banned phenomenal willing calculated
psychological seduce spell binding unable
magnet effortless insatiable secret
record-breaking amazing cutting edge incalculable
absolute thrilled legendary boost
enhance improve benefits enjoy
reduce release loosen combat
discover achieve counter increase
how-to discover master create
generate optimize enliven improve
advanced cultivate progress revamp
refine upgrade align balance
cheerful enthusiastic inclined zealous
attract allure induce invite
tempting follow substitute uncomplicated
simple agile knowing powerful
able clever straightforward intricate

Conclusion

The list could go on and on. Using these words in your titles and subjects along with a keyword will work wonders for your traffic. Take the time to craft titles that will draw people into your world, get them to click it, and then read it. Spend more time on this aspect of your writing and you will be guaranteed to see results.

What other words do you like to use?
What are some titles that you’ve used that have worked for you?

If you enjoyed this article I would appreciate if you click the link below to tweet this post. I’ll use these concepts as examples to craft the tweets for this post.

Made My Day

September 18th, 2009

maslowMy Twitter Account
Yesterday I was looking at my twitter account and ran across these two tweets. It made me feel great. I have the ability to drive a lot of traffic but rarely are they ever to a page or site that says to purchase anything. They are simply posts that help inform, educate, show how-to, help to make decisions, and to motivate. They offer value. Of course not everything that gets tweeted is advertising or spam, there are a lot of great quotes and links to breaking news. Sad to say though is that the majority of it is just that, advertising and spam. People just don’t understand that people don’t want to get sold to. They still have the old school mentality and are using Twitter as a advertising portal. They don’t get that when people are put into situations where they are being sold to, their natural tendency is to run away.

Dr. Joyce Knudsen
It appears Joyce had a lot more to say than she could in a tweet so she had to have two. I’ll bet my tweets stood out like a sore thumb. I get a lot of the same types of responses on my Facebook page as well. I treat it the same way.

As contradictory as this sounds, online marketing is a people business. It’s about nurturing relationships. About helping and educating people that you’ve come to know. It’s about sharing your personalities and nuances with each other. It’s empathy and understanding. Selling is never about the product. It’s about relationships.

Thank you so much Joyce!

It’s A Message

Social Media Boom
Well it seems now that social media marketing is like a shiny new silver dollar and almost everyone is waking up and getting involved, as they should. There’s no question that social media applications are becoming central to our online lives, and soon social apps will be an integral part of the very operating systems we use. People are using Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube like crazy, and there are no signs of slowing down.

But Don’t Forget
What everyone still needs to realize is that as neat and nifty these online applications are, at the heart of it all, especially for marketers, is they are used to convey messages. You can never forget that these new social technologies are simply different and new ways to communicate. You also need to know that technology by itself is not can not compel anyone to do anything. You need to make sure that you don’t get the social technologies mixed with the message.

It’s Still A Message
So now we know that every status update, Tweet, and Facebook message is nothing more than a communication between a sender and on the other end, a reader. What your message says and how you say it are what matters. Don’t get caught up in the hype of Web 2.0 when it comes to conveying your message. At the core of it all you still need to deliver relevant messages, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, or an email campaign. Make sure you communications deliver a persuasive call to action because when it is all done and said, it’s still only a message. How you choose to craft and convey the words in it will make all the difference.

Helping Small Business To Make Your Business Big

August 9th, 2009

cornerstoreAs online marketers we are constantly made aware of new marketing opportunities that appear to us each and every day. If we indeed are true marketers, we see these opportunities as ones that we could potentially succeed with. We do not limit our own potential. Notwithstanding, as entrepreneurs we recognize our need to be able to be nimble enough to potentially capitalize on these opportunities when they present themselves. We have the need to be able to quickly adapt to these new opportunities, to execute them, and put ourselves in a position to be able to profit from them. So how can we go about putting ourselves in this position?

The thousand dollar sentence in the first paragraph, or million to those who don’t like to be limited, is “We do not limit our potential”. In the course of learning online marketing we may think that we are only working in the realm of the internet, but in actuality, our knowledge is not limited to only the online realm. Let me explain. We recognize our ability to be able to advertise or get our messages out to “targeted” audiences. We recognize that it doesn’t take extremely large budgets to do so. We know that there are alternatives to conventional media and we know them well. We recognize and understand the concept of attraction marketing. These are what we do to build our own businesses. Why couldn’t these same concepts be transferred to traditional brick and mortar small businesses? That is exactly what is happening.

There are thousands upon thousands of businesses that are now starting to use the internet to help their traditional brick and mortar business. This goes far beyond the scope of a website that is simply an electronic brochure that provides a list of services and prices. These are websites that are using social media in the form of Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, and blogging. These businesses are involving their customers and potential customers with dialog, a two way interaction. They are putting faces behind their business names and engaging in dialog that informs, educates, and even entertains their customers. They are using Twitter in their customer service. They are using Youtube to demonstrate uses of their products. They are providing articles on Facebook to show how their products and services can benefit their customers. There are dry cleaning businesses that send out notifications via Twitter that people can come and pick up their items. There are pizza parlors letting people know their pizza delivery will be there within one minute via Twitter. There are hardware stores providing people with links to “How-To” instructions along with price lists for specific home repair projects on Facebook. There are businesses letting people know that there are specials going on in their stores on Twitter and Facebook. There are stores that will answer questions about anything that they have expertise with FAQ sections of their stores blog. There are thousands upon thousands of newletters getting sent from businesses providing customers with information about their business, how they interact with the community, and other things that may interest them.

So why couldn’t you be the one that shows your local small businessman how to do this? Yes you. After all, you know these techniques. You may have to learn a little about some of the traditional marketing methods but for the most part, there is not a business around that wouldn’t like to be able to do this. Why can’t you be the one that makes small businesses aware of the potential? Aware of the cost savings? Aware that you can be the one that helps them achieve that goal?

I can see it now. The Sunset Drive In with their own Tuesday and Thursday burger specials with free fries if they sign up for the newsletter. The blog of Bill’s Dry Cleaning offering Twitter notification that their cleaning is done and tips-n-tricks to avoid staining for certain material. Bill also is the king of puns. The Facebook page of Angela, the one who not only gives you a great haircut at her hair styling salon, but a short neck massage that will have you coming back for more. Angela also offers a discount for referrals and for those who are subscribed to her newsletter. You get the picture. This opens up a world of opportunity for yourself if you can cater to these small businesses.

Show them what social media is, how they can interact with their customers, how they can combine some of their traditional marketing with social media, how to make their business stand out from the others, and how they can start letting people get to know ‘them’. Implementing this will not only help you make a profit, but can literally change the lives of those businesses that are now struggling because of the economy. This could change the futures of many of those mutual entrepreneurial family that you are a part of. I’ll leave you with one last item that makes this opportunity much easier to do than you may think it will be. I’ll leave it in a form of a question. How many people within a 10 square mile area of where you are right now, know how to teach and educate these people on the techniques I was just writing about?

Have a remarkable day and help your local small businesses grow.

My Twitter Responses to New Followers

July 9th, 2009

Over at TweetLater.com You have the option of automatically sending a welcome message to new followers. I would bet most people use the default message and if they do customize one, they only have one. The first thing you should do is get rid of the generic message. Secondly, a rule that you HAVE to follow is to stop the urge to have a message that contains spam. If you want to repel someone, the best way is in your very first contact, try and sell them something. Thirdly, an option you have is to put in several, I use 20 return messages when someone follows me. Remember, you want to stand out, get the person curious, and maybe solicit some kind of response. I have some that range from the ridicules to the sublime. I actually have a high rate of response from these.

In order to set up the multiple rotating feature you need to wrap the 140 characters or less messages in curly braces {} and delimit them with a bar | . Here is an example of what I use. These are just a few random messages I send out and some examples of some of the responses.

If there’s one thing I just want is… it’s for you to have a remarkable day! Hope life’s treating you good. |
If you could ever get a nice European sports car, what color would you like? I’m thinking of a dark blue. |
Have you ever noticed that when you stop searching and looking for something, the thing then appears? Isn’t that weird? |
I like fishing. A bad day of fishing is always better than the best day of work. Do you get to fish as much as you want to? |
Now that I have so much free time my wife’s honey do list is growing. Little does she know it but I hire the neighbor kids to do most of it.|
I like apples better than oranges. Isn’t it amazing how we are all so much alike but each have our own peculiarities. Did I spell that ? |
Do you like beer? I do. Maybe too much. Maybe it’s because I have too much time on my hands. Maybe I need to get a real job. Nah…

Content Is King – Learn What To Write About

July 6th, 2009

Content, SEO, Writing, Blogging, Value, How-To, Tip-n-Tricks,TrafficI know a lot of people out there are getting online to somehow start making some money because they have aspirations of firing their boss, staying at home to raise their own kids, supplementing their incomes or retirements, and to nurture their entrepreneurial spit that hides in each and everyone one of them.  If they’ve done their due-diligence they should know there’s a lot more than meets the eye and have partnered up or found someone to emulate to teach them the ropes.  Even then, the bottom line on how successful anyone is going to be in this industry is how much traffic they can generate and how they convert that traffic into sales.

I just noticed that what I’m about to say rhymes but maybe it will help to remember.  That is “The number ONE thing, is that CONTENT is king”.  I heard it said just last week by an online millionaire.  Content for me means, blog posts, ezine articles, videos, reviews about others content, and comments on others content.  I know a large part of the landscape in social media is Twitter, but it may be possible to convey some content, but 140 words won’t cut it in my book.  Twitter is used as the communication channel to tell, educate, and inform others about content that is educational, interesting, and teaches something.  It is merely the communication channel.

Content does not have to be eloquent prose.  It simply has to state some facts, why you agree with or not, why you think it’s important, and what YOUR perspective about them.  The exact same topic should be different than what others write because it will be from YOUR perspective.  If you’ve discovered something that really helped you, write about it.  You have a different perspectives and the people who read your material will appreciate it because they may be just learning, just like you are.  As we speak there are tens of thousands of people a day coming on to the internet to find their fortune. You can be their guide.

So another way I come up with content.  Whatever your niche is going to be, come up with 75-100 keywords about it.   Keywords are going to be your nouns and verbs of the nomenclature of your niche.  As an example I’ll use a niche called marketing.  Here are ten keywords that would be expected  to find  for this niche.  (affiliate, article. auto responder, back link, banner, blog, business model, central hub, and content).  So with those 10 words mathematically I could write about 90+ combination of those  keywords.  Here are about 10 titles you could use from those 10. Attracting Affiliates With Back links.  Do I need An Autoresponder For Affiliate Marketing? Using Back links In Your Article Marketing.  Can Blogging Attract Affiliates For You?  What Kind of Banner To Use On Your Blog.  Using Keywords On Your Blog.  Using Keywords In Your Article Marketing.  The Key to Your Business Model – A Central Hub How To Write Blog Content.

So there I came up with 10.  You get the idea.  There is no reason you can’t come up with 75+ keywords for your niche.  Think them through.  Go to ezinearticles.com and pick the 10 most read articles in your niche and look for them there.  Use a thesaurus and find them.  Then think of as many combination of key words as possible.  An advantage to using multiple keywords in a title is Google will rank them higher.  Then sit down and write.  Step away when your done.  Reread it and check for grammatical errors then post it.  Your done.  I did this one in about 20 minutes.  Went down an had a drink of water and chatted with my daughter, came up to my office and proofed it.  There is no reason not to have content.  Now have at it! Content is king.  If you found this useful consider clicking the Tweet and Face book buttons next to the title.

I made a wrong mistake

Sad, Boy, Redhead, Mistake, Hurt Feelings
Good evening everyone. Well I have a dilemma that I have to deal with over at Facebook. Well over on Facebook you have the option of not hiding your birthday. Well I have quite a few Facebook friends, 3000+ and I had quite a few people wish me happy birthday. I was given virtual flowers, chocolate, gifts, and even had some people make videos. It was quite overwhelming. This morning I wrote a note thanking around 200 people and I still had some to go. This evening I decided to respond to the messages I received. I wrote up a standardized thank you and commenced answering what I would figure 50 messages. A few minutes into doing that I got a warning message that I was doing something against their terms and to stop. OK. I stopped. Well I also had over 25 friend requests so as I usually do, I accept and put a welcome message on their page. I was into about 10 of them when I got a message saying I was suspended. No account, a lot of hard work over the last year, and I hear Facebook is hard to deal with.

I guess I could panic and be mad, but their system has no way of knowing whether something is legitimate or spam. I kind of wish they had that policy instituted on Twitter. I grumbled a bit and then crafted a letter simply explaining what I was doing. I’ve heard that they will re-instate after a while but it could range between a few days to a few weeks. That’s all I really can do. Now I’ll have more time to spend on this blog. This is a lesson we all can learn from. When you rely on other internet sites to carry your message you need to be prepared in case they simply suspend you or drop off the earth, whether for a valid reason or not. You need to try and get in a position where you host all your own content or as much as possible yourself. You also have to be looking for the next social medium that will replace some of the old and be able to easily adapt.

So as Yogi Berra once said “I made a wrong mistake.”
