Traffic from unlikely places…

A recent trip to the store left me quite bemused and a little angry with myself for not finding a perfectly good marketing method that was so simple, it was laughable. I was so intrigued by the marketer that they got a call from me, whereupon I asked about their reasons for marketing in such a way. How it started was with me picking up a business card that was left on a countertop in a store. On it were the words “Lay-Offs”, “Redundancy”, and “We can help”. Having a friend who had just been laid off, I picked up the card, and when I got back to the house, I looked at it.

The person who had gone ahead with this marketing style told me it was nothing new, and people have been doing it for some time. The reason it works so well right now, is the fact that millions of people have been hit by credit crunches and economic downturns. The actual proposition on the card was to get people enrolled in online marketing coaching, and the owner wasn’t half bad. The entry fee was very low, making it accessible to most people, and that’s why it worked so well. Problem + solution + accessibility for target audience.

When you are considering your next marketing campaign, remember that you are talking to people, and people like to be helped with problems. The first paragraph of every marketing copy that ever worked is about problems and solutions. Begin by addressing a problem that your target audience needs solving, and you will get their attention, and generally retain it throughout the copy. If you are hitting all the right notes with your copy, and can genuinely provide help to people, then you will get buyers – it is that simple. Every testimonial you get should be published, and do not be shy about the work you are doing. Make sure people know what a kick you get out of helping these people.

Link Wheels

Anyone that knows anything about search engine optimisation understands that link wheels are a big part of this and can have a large impact on your website and any future business that you could possibly do. When first explained to a person, link wheels can sound very confusing and seem too overwhelming to understand. When a person does not fully understand something, there is little chance that they will ever actually do it/get it done. However, when explained in the correct manner and in a way that anyone can understand, you will soon realise that link wheels are relatively easy to learn about and therefore, relatively easy to accomplish yourself for your own website. Link wheels really can change the way in which clients are attracted to your business. coolcatOne way you can get traffic to your blog is to get people returning to your blog over and over. You should have a heavy emphasis on your returning visitors. After all, they took the time to visit your blog before and if you can keep your content valuable there is no reason they won’t come back. Yes, people like the valuable information that you provide, but they also enjoy you. Gary Vanerchuck says in his latest book, CRUSH IT, that we have to admit there is a bit of voyeur in all of us. I’m not sure about that but I do know people are curious.

My Mistake
One thing that I may be guilty of but have remedied recently is letting people know more about me. I was remiss in stories about “me”. These stories are the things people like to read. They do it for many reasons. The number one reason in my book is curiosity.

Welcome Curiosity
Curiosity may kill the cat but it will not kill the sale and this is why. If you look at the experience of someone visiting your site, they not only look at the content but also try and make formulated hypothesis about the characters they read about as well. The truth is that people love stories. They like to relate to the story and the characters they read about. They like to read about preferences, history, culture, and practices. They want to be a part of the plot. They do this by finding and reading information about you and those who leave comments on your blog. See http://www.chriskilber.com/using-psychology-to-sell/. The better you are making yourself someone that your readers can relate too, the more they will return.

Curiosity Raises Questions
Curiosity also makes people ask questions. These are usually not questions verbatim to others but questions they ask themselves. If you can figure out what they may be and answer them you then positioned yourself as someone who has great insight and can be considered an authority in your potential customer’s eyes. If you are clever you can also craft your writing to lead people to ask questions to themselves and then answer them. Not only will this build insightfulness into your writing but they will also gain their trust.

Focus on Readers
An aspect of using curiosity in your marketing is that by focusing on the curiosity of your potential customers, you can use it to provide value to your readers that are based on their questions and needs. It will help you hone in on value. Traditional sales and marketing has you always focusing on getting the sale, the closing, or qualifying. These tend to devalue the customer which is the farthest thing from what you want to do.

Respect
Using curiosity helps reinforce that it’s the relationship, not the product that sells. It may surprise the potential customer in a positive way by re-framing their expectations and view of you. It shows the potential customer that you can focus on things outside of yourself and your product. The customer or prospect will also realize you have a process that respects the customer. By using this approach you will always have a reasonable and best possible excuse for a follow up call. Finally, you will gain enormous respect.

Summary
So you see curiosity can helps both the potential customer and you by staying focused on the customers internal and external questions that they may have. You can use this to come across as being insightful and an absolute authority in your niche.

Learn Without Memorizing

tsnPart of being an entrepreneur involves having to where many hats. If you’ve been studying using social media for your marketing there are a lot of things to remember. In the context of having to be as efficient as possible through daily habits, there are many things we have to remember that matter greatly. While no single task involved with it is extremely difficult, having to remember them all can be challenging, especially when literally the next day you may be teaching someone else what you just learned today.

With that I offer you a blog post called How to Learn Without Memorizing written by Scott Young on a Blog site called Think Simple Now. In it he describes a completely different system of learning by connecting ideas together. Scott describes this as creative learning.

What I’d like to advocate in this article is a more creative, spontaneous form of learning than the style you were probably coached for in school. Instead of repeatedly scanning the same information for minimal benefit, invest your time learning in creating connections with the information you are learning. Not only is it a more natural way to learn, it isn’t painfully boring like most memorization tasks are.

He goes on to describe many different strategies that you can implement as well. I find this kind of learning fascinating and will certainly delve more into it. I may even try and use it to try and explain some abstract technical information. Don’t be surprised if you find it in one of my later 101 traffic generation strategies in the near future.

I’m going to give you a link to one of them as a sample below. I think you’ll find that these are much more than simple 2 or 3 sentence tips.

Discover How To Create Irresistible and Tempting Titles

I had a few questions about titles this weekend. I’ll bring this old post out front and center once again in case you missed it.

titleWhat’s in a title?
How you title things make a tremendous impact on whether people will read or consider reading content. In this context, content is in the form of emails, blog posts, tweets, Ezine articles, and other forms of communication that you want others to read. In all cases the main goal is to get people to open, click, or otherwise save or bookmark for reading later. Let’s examine some of the forms of communication.

Email Subjects

The title is contained as what in email parlance as the subject. Subjects are treated a little bit differently based on who the email is coming from. The difference is based on one thing. That is trust. If the email is coming from someone they trust, friends and family for sure, they will open. But there is also information that was requested and comes in the form of newsletters, RSS feeds, and other aggregations of information. If someone doesn’t recognize the senders name they are typically going to look at the subject and make a determination as to what they are going to do. What the subject contains will determine the reader’s next actions. If it’s from you, you want to have as an inviting subject as possible.

Blog Post Titles
A blog post title works in the same way as a subject line in an email. Your objective is to get people to read your post. Hopefully, when your blog post is syndicated throughout the Internet via Twitter tweets, Facebook notes, blog backlinks, email bodies, and other forms of electronic communication it will compel people to open and read it. Another factor that has to be considered in blog post titles is the SEO factor. Your title should both contain a keyword or two and also be relevant to the content that is contained in it. If you have a title about cars, your content better not be about plants. I’ll talk about some of the psychological factors below.

Ezine Articles
Titles should work the same way as blog post titles but should probably have more of an emphasis on keywords than actions or questions contained in the title. Most people simply do not search Ezines. They use Google and Google recommends the Ezine articles to them. The more SEO friendly the title, the better the ranking and higher it’s possibility to be towards the top of the search. I also recommend your resource box contain a link to your blog.

Twitter Tweets
Now tweets per se don’t have the concept of a title but it should be contained some where in the 140 characters. Having important attention grabbing phrases that are contained in the actual article with the title in your tweets will help people feel compelled to click them and follow the link over to the source. Using certain psychological keywords will raise the probability of the tweet being opened. They will grab the attention of the readers.

In all these examples, if you understand underlying psychological impulses and urges you can use them to your advantage. So if we ask the question, what do people want?, what do people respond to?, what do people have an interest in?, and are people interested in?, this should provide us with some clues to help formulate a title. Here are some different types of titles that you should strive for?

Types of Titles

  1. Tell them something true about them and then tell them to take action.
  2. Create compelling curiosity.
  3. Make claims that are almost unbelievable.  (Be able to back them up)
  4. Create something of high interest to target direct interests.
  5. Use humor.  If you can make them laugh they will click.
  6. Inspire and motivate them.  If they feel good about themselves and they will act.
  7. Make them mysterious.  People like mysteries.
  8. Appeal to their logic.  Restate something they believe strongly.

So these are the categories or types of possible titles or subjects that can be used.  Now that we know what it is we need to formulate what words can we use that will compel people to act.  We need to use words that influence, persuade, and motivate people to act, (click, read, signup, etc…).  This can be accomplished by using words that can help people image something.  They are words that describe things in ways that make them bigger than life.  They are words that evoke emotion.  Here are some words that will practically compel people to their natural predispositions to investigate things that are curious, humorous, mysterious, logical, interesting, and bold.  This of course is not an exhaustible list.  They contain:

Conclusion

The list could go on and on. Using these words in your titles and subjects along with a keyword will work wonders for your traffic. Take the time to craft titles that will draw people into your world, get them to click it, and then read it. Spend more time on this aspect of your writing and you will be guaranteed to see results.

Yesterday I was looking at my twitter account and ran across these two tweets. It made me feel great. I have the ability to drive a lot of traffic but rarely are they ever to a page or site that says to purchase anything. They are simply posts that help inform, educate, show how-to, help to make decisions, and to motivate. They offer value. Of course not everything that gets tweeted is advertising or spam, there are a lot of great quotes and links to breaking news. Sad to say though is that the majority of it is just that, advertising and spam. People just don’t understand that people don’t want to get sold to. They still have the old school mentality and are using Twitter as a advertising portal. They don’t get that when people are put into situations where they are being sold to, their natural tendency is to run away.

It appears Joyce had a lot more to say than she could in a tweet so she had to have two. I’ll bet my tweets stood out like a sore thumb. I get a lot of the same types of responses on my Facebook page as well. I treat it the same way.

As contradictory as this sounds, online marketing is a people business. It’s about nurturing relationships. About helping and educating people that you’ve come to know. It’s about sharing your personalities and nuances with each other. It’s empathy and understanding. Selling is never about the product. It’s about relationships.

I’ve been a bit derelict in my duty and have been a bit sparse on my posts. I have been working on some projects related to this blog and you should start seeing some more concrete content and some action items that you’ll be able to implement. What’s the purpose? Well it’s to drive a lot more traffic to your blog. In fact, I’m sure of it that you’ll be getting more traffic. You’ll be able to start converting sales in your funnels and building your lists. “That’s a bold statement there Chris”, I can hear you saying. Why am I saying this? I’ve had some concrete examples that I implemented earlier this week and have had some fantastic results. As you know I’m big on leadership and one of the tenets that I’ve taken to heart over the last 6 months is to provide value to others. Phenomenal value. Great News For You!
One of the things that I did earlier this week and am excited to share with you was to implement a strategy with a customized web site I built to help with content syndication. It integrates with bit.ly and some other twitter tools. It’s about 95% ready for prime time and you will be hearing more about it in the near future. On Monday morning I went through a cycle of what would occur if I had a content syndication group or tribe. This would be a small group of 5 people. I syndicated 4 other people’s last blog post. I created a flood of tweets that was syndicated to my twitter followers. As I write, the 4 different blog posts received 394 hits, 323 hits, 233 hits, and 170 hits. These were distinctly because of my efforts. The statistics were tracked by bit.ly. They averaged around 280 hits each. So lets do the math. If you write 2 posts a week and have one of your tribe members syndicate it. That would be 2 x 280 = 560 unique hits to your blog. Well you wouldn’t have just one tribe member do it, you would have 3 more. So the number of hits to your blog would be 4 x 560 = 2240 a week. Then 4 weeks x 2240 = 8960 hits a month. What is also exciting about this is it should only take about 1 hour per week per tribe member. The time it took me to drive the traffic mentioned above was about 80 minutes. If you have time for 10 or 20, why not? So with 10 it could be 20K visitors a month. 20 could be 40K visitors a month. What it comes down to is you just need to create quality content for others to syndicate and syndicate theirs. There will be more to come on this for sure.

Proof of Concept
Secondly, because I have tangible proof of this working I had some people start calling me a expert in the area and it is something that really excites me, I decided to specialize in it. It really does cover many things across many applications and social media sites and using social media in general. There are best practices and strategies that can help you optimize your experiences and results. These are things that I provide in my training package in depth and will be covering fairly well in my 101 Traffic Strategy series that you can sign up for.
