Brick Relish – Keyword Modifiers Part 2

August 18th, 2010

Following on from part 1, we will now take our three main keyphrases, and generate a big list of modifiers.

  • Hosted autoresponder
  • Server side autoresponder
  • Autoresponder software

To get a large list of words that are similar, you can use Google Adwords Keyword Tool, a Thesaurus or better still, a little tool that deserves some kudos.

http://soovle.com is a great little tool for generating suggested keywords

The key to unlocking the keyword research puzzle is modifying keywords

based on one original keyword. You type in a keyword, and automagically, you get a load of suggestions live from search engines like Google and Ask. Here, we will type in “hosted” and “hosted autoresponder”, to try and generate suggestions. Get these all written down on Excel if possible, as that will help later. Have each modifier and keyword in a separate column. So ‘hosted’ would be in column 1, ‘autoresponder’ column 2 etc. Don’t forget to find modifiers for your main keyword. Autoresponder’s actually go by the name of ‘email responder’ etc. So we can add that to the list. Check this keyword in Soovle too. You would find modifiers like “system”, and “automatic” for “email responder” for example. Add any other keywords that your product or service are known by. You should be able to generate a fairly large list.

Now, you should have around three or four columns to work from. You will now check you’ve covered all your bases by using a keyword modifier tool called  Keyword Lizard. Enter your columns of keywords & modifiers, and check the appropriate boxes if you need to. For example, if this exercise is for your Adwords campaign, use Step 4 & 5 of the tool. Otherwise, simply let it do its stuff, and modify the whole list.

From this quick exercise, you will generate hundreds of keywords. Different permutations will give better/worse monthly searches – but they are all worthy of being included if they get ‘some’ searches… remember, sometimes it’s better to have 10 keywords getting 100 searches per month, than trying to rank for a keyword that has 1000 searches… but heavy competition.

Brick Relish – Keyword Modifiers Part 1

August 16th, 2010

Keywords are not easy to find when you are too close to the subject. You can know everything there is to know about a niche and then when it comes time to brainstorm ten off the top of your head for an article, or for a press release, you are stumped, and white page syndrome sets in. This is because you can often be too close to the subject, to actually see what the real underlying keywords are. Sure, you could probably reel off some beauties, though try competing with anyone on Google and you will struggle. To get good quality sub-niche keywords you gotta dig deep!

So what’s all the ‘Brick Relish’ about? Well, Brick Relish is actually an anagram of my name – Chris Kilber… and ten whole points go to the person who spotted that first. The reason I have used an anagram, is to just remind you that at first glance, words can be just that – words. To make them worth something, and stand out, you have to modify them. Keywords can be modified in many ways, to make them more appealing, and of course get more traffic. Let’s look at how we can modify a keyword.

As an example, we will look at the niche of internet marketing, and specifically autoresponders. Imagine you had a site that reviews the best autoresponders, and you are trying to sell these to internet marketers as an affiliate. Right away, your brain is thinking of all the keywords surrounding autoresponders, when in fact what you need to do is look at keywords that can be attached to the main keyword. With some niches, it’s easy to think of keywords that can be attached, such as locations, sizes, colors etc. – like “lawyers Connecticut” or “small ladies boat shoes” as examples. With something like autoresponders, you can do the same, you just need to know WHO the product is used by…

  • Are people looking for cheap or cost effective autoresponders?
  • Are people looking for hosted or standalone autoresponders?
  • Are people looking for subscription based or one-off purchase software autoresponders?

The answer to all of those questions, of course, is YES! People are looking for all of the above, so you need modifiers for all of them. Let’s take hosted/standalone autoresponders, and start with three main niche keyphrases:-

  • Hosted autoresponder
  • Server side autoresponder
  • Autoresponder software

In the next part of this series, we will look at how we can add lots more words to the modifiers, and build a huge list from just those three keywords.

48 WordPress Plugins I Can’t Live Without

October 21st, 2009

pluginsDown below I have the forty eight or so plugins that I use on this blog. I have a little blurb about what they do. Because wordpress is so customizable and most of the themes are different, there may be reasons to include one that are missing here and reasons I have some others don’t. But for the most part these are essential. I am almost positive there are new one’s out there that I should have but these have been serving me well. Feel free to suggest others.

Akismet
Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not. You need a WordPress.com API key to use it. You can review the spam it catches under “Comments.”

All in One SEO Pack
Out-of-the-box SEO for your WordPress blog.   As a fan of SEO, I think it’s like putting together a three dimensional puzzle, I like this plugin and it is one of the mainstays of SEO for wordpress.  Of special interest is the “Dynamically Generate Keywords for Posts Page:” option.  The plugin even has it’s own forum if you’d like to learn more.

Dewplayer
Insert Dewplayer (Flash Mp3 Player) in posts & comments.  There are a lot mp3 players.  This happens to be the one I’m currently using.

Disable Revisions
Disable revision functions in WordPress and delete all entries of revisions in database. It is extremely important to back up your database before install this plugin.  I always hate when there ends up being 8 revisions of the same post.  This should be a custom option built into wordpress to begin with.
