Targeting Niches Part One

April 26th, 2011

The first and what I consider the most important task when doing marketing is to target your market. The more narrowed your scope, the better chance you have at striking your potential prospects and buyers chords. When using too broad a scope you then have to be everything to everyone. You end up not satisfying or providing anything of value to anyone. I might add, marketing to everyone can also be mighty expensive.

I always like to use niches that are subsets of broader niches or some that have a very common thread. Let’s say you are marketing a health and wellness opportunity and products. This in of itself is a very large industry, and some would even say saturated. I would approach it by using the premise that people who are health conscious buy supplements, nutrients, and vitamins items that enhance, prevent, and increase their health. That being said, they probably would buy items such as water purifiers, air purifiers, exercise equipment, health club memberships, travel packages, etc. Finding people and companies that market these products may already have a huge list of past customers and/or people on their mailing lists. What’s to stop you from mutually sharing each others lists, and/or even proposing them to join you in your business. This would be another revenue stream for them that is not in direct competition with their products. Be creative.

The relationships between niches is similar to the 6 degrees of separation. I’ll explore some of these relationships next time and open the world of possibilities.

Part Two

Free content? Just ask…

September 3rd, 2010

Too many people are afraid to ask for something that they consider as having great value. Whilst it may be valuable to you, it may be something that would take just a few minutes to another person. When you are looking for fresh new content, and you want it for free, then you will need to do some asking. Blog owners that add daily content to their site are already writing content about their niche, and about their blog, so they will not be too bothered about doing another article, just for you, which will link from your site to theirs. A backlink. Yes, that is going to be your bargaining chip, and it will be worth their time in writing your article.

You need to find the blogs that are updated regularly, and you can do this by searching Google for a related search term to your blog, and then ensuring you are limiting to blogs that have been updated in the last few weeks (in the left sidebar on Google search results). Find a good quality blog that has regular and not sporadic content being posted. Three to four  times per week is ideal. This suggests that the blogger is a professional, and they value fresh content.

The best way to approach this deal is straight out asking them to write an article on your blog as a guest, and giving them the opportunity to add a backlink right at the end. You can play on the fact that you would rather an informed and professional article on the subject matter than to plagiarize their great work.

You will usually get a few hits per week at this. People are very willing to give up a few minutes of their time to write a 300 word post on something they write about every day. They will probably rehash one of their older posts – which is fine, because its going to be great new content on YOUR blog.

Why do a press release?

August 20th, 2010

Search engine optimisation is a huge part of any online business now-a-days and can be make or break for a lot of people. Not enough back links and you won’t get the sales you desire, too many back links too soon and Google will maybe sandbox your site. With so much to learn it seems impossible to do a good job unless you are a professional and one of the best at that! However, despite your first impression, SEO can be very easy to learn and accomplish successfully for anyone, providing you are using the best methods such as link wheels and press releases.

Press releases are a relatively easy way to get your site up to the top pages of Google – and maybe even the first page if you do it right! First of all, you need to ascertain that your written press release falls in line with the guidelines set out by the companies you will be submitting it to for example, if they allow the anchored link you should put in. If it isn’t, then your work will be rejected and unpublished – not a great start to say the least! So, once you have mastered the art of writing these press releases, making sure you have entered a strong enough keyword density, you can then begin the submission process and start reaping the benefits of your work.

You need to ensure you use the best submission websites around in order to obtain the best results for your website. Providing your niche is a good enough one, your website can be boosted to the first or second page of Google within 3 days! However, you must ensure you allow your new website to gather a few back links from elsewhere first as if it is hit with hundreds very quickly then there is a possibility of it being removed from Google all together for quite some time! If all this sounds a little too much for you or you don’t feel quite up to the challenge just yet, you can always hire someone else to do the job for you!

Brick Relish – Keyword Modifiers Part 1

August 16th, 2010

Keywords are not easy to find when you are too close to the subject. You can know everything there is to know about a niche and then when it comes time to brainstorm ten off the top of your head for an article, or for a press release, you are stumped, and white page syndrome sets in. This is because you can often be too close to the subject, to actually see what the real underlying keywords are. Sure, you could probably reel off some beauties, though try competing with anyone on Google and you will struggle. To get good quality sub-niche keywords you gotta dig deep!

So what’s all the ‘Brick Relish’ about? Well, Brick Relish is actually an anagram of my name – Chris Kilber… and ten whole points go to the person who spotted that first. The reason I have used an anagram, is to just remind you that at first glance, words can be just that – words. To make them worth something, and stand out, you have to modify them. Keywords can be modified in many ways, to make them more appealing, and of course get more traffic. Let’s look at how we can modify a keyword.

As an example, we will look at the niche of internet marketing, and specifically autoresponders. Imagine you had a site that reviews the best autoresponders, and you are trying to sell these to internet marketers as an affiliate. Right away, your brain is thinking of all the keywords surrounding autoresponders, when in fact what you need to do is look at keywords that can be attached to the main keyword. With some niches, it’s easy to think of keywords that can be attached, such as locations, sizes, colors etc. – like “lawyers Connecticut” or “small ladies boat shoes” as examples. With something like autoresponders, you can do the same, you just need to know WHO the product is used by…

  • Are people looking for cheap or cost effective autoresponders?
  • Are people looking for hosted or standalone autoresponders?
  • Are people looking for subscription based or one-off purchase software autoresponders?

The answer to all of those questions, of course, is YES! People are looking for all of the above, so you need modifiers for all of them. Let’s take hosted/standalone autoresponders, and start with three main niche keyphrases:-

  • Hosted autoresponder
  • Server side autoresponder
  • Autoresponder software

In the next part of this series, we will look at how we can add lots more words to the modifiers, and build a huge list from just those three keywords.

How to Dominate and Master Your Niche With Your Content

August 2nd, 2009

I thought I’d revisit an old theme of mine, and that is regarding content. There simply is no reason you can’t come up with some. Here is a video I made discussing the matter. It is really a culmination of 2 previous posts I did. Make sure you read the comment section as well. There is an experiment I did with the concept that proves this works folks.

The method I describe will make you the master of your niche. You can’t help but learn everything there is to learn about it. By the time your done learning you’ll also have a massive collection of posts and articles that show YOU are the de facto authority of your niche. Google will know this as well.
