Blog Roll

December 10th, 2010

How’s everyone doing? Had some hilarious threads going with Scott Brandon Hoffman on Facebook this evening. I can’t spell real well because my eyes are watering from laughing! Scott is a philosopher, inspirational speaker, host, comic, writer/producer, spiritual outlaw, and life long seeker of truth. It’s like Oprah & Letterman had a kid. Scott’s mission is to, and I will quote him:

“To Inspire, Wake Up, Elevate, Empower, and Entertain a Worldwide Audience into Living their full potential AND truth, all while having outrageous fun, seeing the humor AND the absurdity of it all, and to NOT take any of this Human Stuff too seriously.”

Definitely look him up. He is all about being genuine. He also attracts a full cast of characters.

Well I used to blog on a site for over 7+ years. At one time it was extremely popular though the genre was politics, I did meet a huge vast of people from all over the country and had a few run in’s with politicians and reporters alike, some even from the New Yuck Times, (no name dropping here). In the end, I have to say it also made me realize that I wasn’t pigeon-holed into an established political party as I had been when it first started. How’s that for confession?

But one of the things that made that blog successful, was

Facebook Tagging

August 25th, 2010

Facebook, we are all agreed, is awesome. An awesome tool for keeping in touch with your friends, your network, your loved ones who are skiing in Austria, and of cause – awesome for spammers. Yes, we have all had the invites to events that we will never be attending, or the invites to pages that contain matter we would never be interested in… but does any of this put off the experienced, somewhat inexperienced Facebook marketer? I should hope not, because Facebook has an amazing armoury of tools that can help grow your business overnight. I’m speaking this time about Tagging.

Tagging is used by people to get information about a link, page, photo or anything else to another person fast. When you tag somebody on your friends list, they will receive an email. It’s a much more friendly “You were tagged in a photo by John Smith” email subject too. The significance in tagging is not apparent immediately. You have to look a little closer.

Lets say you were a fan of an internet marketing page. You then tag it by inserting @ before the page’s name on your status update, saying “I just posted a pretty in depth review of XYZ website. I’d be interested to know your thoughts! Thanks, Chris.”. What happens next is fairly amazing. Your update will be posted to that page’s wall (eventually) and will go out to however many fans that page has. Fans who read the wall will see this – and possibly visit your site, and then return to “Like” your post on Facebook (or better yet, get some Social Plugins on your site so they can do it there and then).

Unfortunately, this tool is being misused by spammers too. So be careful how you use it – and as with anything online, make it relevant, make it unique, and make it count.

Discover How To Create Irresistible and Tempting Titles

September 25th, 2009

I had a few questions about titles this weekend. I’ll bring this old post out front and center once again in case you missed it.

titleWhat’s in a title?
How you title things make a tremendous impact on whether people will read or consider reading content. In this context, content is in the form of emails, blog posts, tweets, Ezine articles, and other forms of communication that you want others to read. In all cases the main goal is to get people to open, click, or otherwise save or bookmark for reading later. Let’s examine some of the forms of communication.

Email Subjects

The title is contained as what in email parlance as the subject. Subjects are treated a little bit differently based on who the email is coming from. The difference is based on one thing. That is trust. If the email is coming from someone they trust, friends and family for sure, they will open. But there is also information that was requested and comes in the form of newsletters, RSS feeds, and other aggregations of information. If someone doesn’t recognize the senders name they are typically going to look at the subject and make a determination as to what they are going to do. What the subject contains will determine the reader’s next actions. If it’s from you, you want to have as an inviting subject as possible.

Blog Post Titles
A blog post title works in the same way as a subject line in an email. Your objective is to get people to read your post. Hopefully, when your blog post is syndicated throughout the Internet via Twitter tweets, Facebook notes, blog backlinks, email bodies, and other forms of electronic communication it will compel people to open and read it. Another factor that has to be considered in blog post titles is the SEO factor. Your title should both contain a keyword or two and also be relevant to the content that is contained in it. If you have a title about cars, your content better not be about plants. I’ll talk about some of the psychological factors below.

Ezine Articles
Titles should work the same way as blog post titles but should probably have more of an emphasis on keywords than actions or questions contained in the title. Most people simply do not search Ezines. They use Google and Google recommends the Ezine articles to them. The more SEO friendly the title, the better the ranking and higher it’s possibility to be towards the top of the search. I also recommend your resource box contain a link to your blog.

Twitter Tweets
Now tweets per se don’t have the concept of a title but it should be contained some where in the 140 characters. Having important attention grabbing phrases that are contained in the actual article with the title in your tweets will help people feel compelled to click them and follow the link over to the source. Using certain psychological keywords will raise the probability of the tweet being opened. They will grab the attention of the readers.

In all these examples, if you understand underlying psychological impulses and urges you can use them to your advantage. So if we ask the question, what do people want?, what do people respond to?, what do people have an interest in?, and are people interested in?, this should provide us with some clues to help formulate a title. Here are some different types of titles that you should strive for?

Types of Titles

  1. Tell them something true about them and then tell them to take action.
  2. Create compelling curiosity.
  3. Make claims that are almost unbelievable.  (Be able to back them up)
  4. Create something of high interest to target direct interests.
  5. Use humor.  If you can make them laugh they will click.
  6. Inspire and motivate them.  If they feel good about themselves and they will act.
  7. Make them mysterious.  People like mysteries.
  8. Appeal to their logic.  Restate something they believe strongly.

So these are the categories or types of possible titles or subjects that can be used.  Now that we know what it is we need to formulate what words can we use that will compel people to act.  We need to use words that influence, persuade, and motivate people to act, (click, read, signup, etc…).  This can be accomplished by using words that can help people image something.  They are words that describe things in ways that make them bigger than life.  They are words that evoke emotion.  Here are some words that will practically compel people to their natural predispositions to investigate things that are curious, humorous, mysterious, logical, interesting, and bold.  This of course is not an exhaustible list.  They contain:

Words to Use

irresistible untold boggle double
triple quadruple unstoppable potent
banned phenomenal willing calculated
psychological seduce spell binding unable
magnet effortless insatiable secret
record-breaking amazing cutting edge incalculable
absolute thrilled legendary boost
enhance improve benefits enjoy
reduce release loosen combat
discover achieve counter increase
how-to discover master create
generate optimize enliven improve
advanced cultivate progress revamp
refine upgrade align balance
cheerful enthusiastic inclined zealous
attract allure induce invite
tempting follow substitute uncomplicated
simple agile knowing powerful
able clever straightforward intricate

Conclusion

The list could go on and on. Using these words in your titles and subjects along with a keyword will work wonders for your traffic. Take the time to craft titles that will draw people into your world, get them to click it, and then read it. Spend more time on this aspect of your writing and you will be guaranteed to see results.

What other words do you like to use?
What are some titles that you’ve used that have worked for you?

It’s A Message

Social Media Boom
Well it seems now that social media marketing is like a shiny new silver dollar and almost everyone is waking up and getting involved, as they should. There’s no question that social media applications are becoming central to our online lives, and soon social apps will be an integral part of the very operating systems we use. People are using Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube like crazy, and there are no signs of slowing down.

But Don’t Forget
What everyone still needs to realize is that as neat and nifty these online applications are, at the heart of it all, especially for marketers, is they are used to convey messages. You can never forget that these new social technologies are simply different and new ways to communicate. You also need to know that technology by itself is not can not compel anyone to do anything. You need to make sure that you don’t get the social technologies mixed with the message.

It’s Still A Message
So now we know that every status update, Tweet, and Facebook message is nothing more than a communication between a sender and on the other end, a reader. What your message says and how you say it are what matters. Don’t get caught up in the hype of Web 2.0 when it comes to conveying your message. At the core of it all you still need to deliver relevant messages, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, or an email campaign. Make sure you communications deliver a persuasive call to action because when it is all done and said, it’s still only a message. How you choose to craft and convey the words in it will make all the difference.

It’s About People Not Products

July 3rd, 2009

People, Networking, Relationships, Fostering, Empathy, BusinessSo someone wants to start a business? An online business at that? Where 95 plus percent of people don’t ever make one thin dime? How are they going to do that? Those are the questions we certainly hear from our self talk and from others that share their ideas with when they first start. Not everyone is geared to be an online marketer. Most people are not even prepared. Most will start by finding a product on a click bank type affiliate site and start figuring out where they can advertise. They start using Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace and anything else they can lay one of their affiliate links down. They justify it by saying it’s advertising. In reality it’s spam. If someone or anything reminds people of someone selling to them what will they do? Run for the hills, Some simply think if they have a page with their product with all the features and a button that says ‘buy me’ on it, people will start purchasing. After all, it’s a great product and it should sell itself. The product may be good but they haven’t grasped the idea that they may be only 1 of 25000 people selling that product. How do they get traffic to their site? Even then, why would they buy from them? What differentiates that person from the other 24,999?

That’s where marketing takes over. Marketing is not simply fancy advertising. Marketing consists of psychology, creating, communicating, fulfilling, exchanging, educating, writing, research, and plain hard work. Are you ready to learn all that? Even then, where are you going to learn all that? You’ll need trainers, mentors, books, video to start to grasp what is involved. Your best bet is to learn from someone who has gone through the same things your going to have to. Personal development is a given. You will need to read books and listen to audio to learn the correct mindsets you’ll need to ingrain upon your self. You’ll also need to develop networks of people that are based on attraction principals. The things you learn will be shared openly with this network. You will also learn from them. You will earn trust. You will start to cultivate relationships that will be based on you, not your products.

Boy those two paragraphs sounded a bit harsh didn’t they. There’s a bit of truth in there for me, but I’m also sure it’s true for most online marketers when they started. The good news is there is a lot of training out there now that is being provided. We don’t have to spend as much time learning from our own mistakes. Being able to hear and understand what others have gone through works just as well. Networking with the right group can save even more time. It has outright become a science. Getting involved with the right group can provide you the materials for success and the only thing that will be left to do is to implement what you learn. As contradictory as this sounds, online marketing is a people business. It’s about nurturing relationships. About helping and educating people that you’ve come to know. It’s about sharing your personalities and nuances with each other. It’s empathy and understanding. Selling is never about the product. It;s about relationships and the sooner anyone who wants to get into the 5% of people who make money, or the 3% that become vastly rich, learns this, the quicker it will happen.

Historic Proportions

June 25th, 2009

History, Historic Proportions, Building, Lead, Action, Educate, InformRecently over at Facebook I had as a comment in the “What I was thinking today” section at the top the following, “Chris. W. Kilber is thinking that today is a day to make some history! What are you going to do today that you will remember for a long time?” I’m not sure what was in my coffee this morning or it must be the new vitamins I’ve been taking recently that has really fired me up and made me optimistic about a lot of things. Nicole Sundene then replied that it was empowering and a tall order. That may be, but was it the cost of success? Anyways, so then I happened to hear something on the radio dealing with the saying, “historic proportions”. It gave me an epiphany. I was thinking of something that could make a historical impact upon your online business, especially if you are just starting out or you started out following the wrong advice. Here is what I came up with.

There’s a lot of information written on online network marketing. There is so much in fact that it’s hard to separate the grain from the chaff. We as online marketers need to steer or coral potential business partners or customers into a position where we can educate and inform them to the services and offerings we have. How do we do that? We create a “marketing funnel” and attract people NOT by being a salesmen and touting the benefits of your product, but by building “YOU INC.”! I would bet that 98% of the products out there are being marketed by 1000’s of people. How can you be the one whom customers come? What you need to do is differentiate yourself from the others using attraction principals and move them into your funnel.

A successful entrepreneur will build their marketing strategies around processes and systems. They will build their own lists of prospects, customers, and partners by offering real world value. This may be in the form of information, how-to’s, time saving methods, insight, motivation, and other things that your list will value. As your list grows and they begin to gain your trust the potential products and services that you may market to them, which may be the same as others are offering, will have a better chance to be purchased from you. As time goes on you could even develop lists that number in the 10’s of thousands. By setting up your funnel properly and using an auto-responder you then have the ability to build your relationship with them with one simple email. As long as you continue to provide value, they will stay on your list.

It is imperative that you set up your marketing funnel as the basic marketing tool in your arsenal. Your possibilities are then endless once you know how to use this basic business building principles to grow your organization on the internet. By using “YOU INC.” as the attraction to your marketing funnel you will be able spin income streams with a variety of products and services. Once you understand this thoroughly and put it into place you will transform your profitability online. We all know that success begets success and imagine what you could do with 50-100 new opt-ins each and every day. How much would your business grow?

In closing, seek out what you need to learn, study it, implement it, and you will increase your online marketing success tremendously, maybe even to historic proportions. You can then thank Nicole for inspiring me to write this. What are you doing today that will be historical?
