Keywords are not easy to find when you are too close to the subject. You can know everything there is to know about a niche and then when it comes time to brainstorm ten off the top of your head for an article, or for a press release, you are stumped, and white page syndrome sets in. This is because you can often be too close to the subject, to actually see what the real underlying keywords are. Sure, you could probably reel off some beauties, though try competing with anyone on Google and you will struggle. To get good quality sub-niche keywords you gotta dig deep!
So what’s all the ‘Brick Relish’ about? Well, Brick Relish is actually an anagram
of my name – Chris Kilber… and ten whole points go to the person who spotted that first. The reason I have used an anagram, is to just remind you that at first glance, words can be just that – words. To make them worth something, and stand out, you have to modify them. Keywords can be modified in many ways, to make them more appealing, and of course get more traffic. Let’s look at how we can modify a keyword.
As an example, we will look at the niche of internet marketing, and specifically autoresponders. Imagine you had a site that reviews the best autoresponders, and you are trying to sell these to internet marketers as an affiliate. Right away, your brain is thinking of all the keywords surrounding autoresponders, when in fact what you need to do is look at keywords that can be attached to the main keyword. With some niches, it’s easy to think of keywords that can be attached, such as locations, sizes, colors etc. – like “lawyers Connecticut” or “small ladies boat shoes” as examples. With something like autoresponders, you can do the same, you just need to know WHO the product is used by…
- Are people looking for cheap or cost effective autoresponders?
- Are people looking for hosted or standalone autoresponders?
- Are people looking for subscription based or one-off purchase software autoresponders?
The answer to all of those questions, of course, is YES! People are looking for all of the above, so you need modifiers for all of them. Let’s take hosted/standalone autoresponders, and start with three main niche keyphrases:-
- Hosted autoresponder
- Server side autoresponder
- Autoresponder software
In the next part of this series, we will look at how we can add lots more words to the modifiers, and build a huge list from just those three keywords.
